What is in a name?
Today’s blog prompt on UKS -
Look up the meaning of your name: Does it fit? Did you want to change it when you were growing up? Do you like it now? If not, what name would you like to have? What is your nickname? How do you feel about it?
Well, being called ‘Heather’ leaves no one wondering what it means and what it is. Fairly easy to understand. A good Scottish name. My name feels like it suits and I have always liked it. My brothers all have equally Scottish names, Stewart, Andrew and Frazer. No doubting where we were all born eh?
I would like to share with you a few words that I came across printed on a tea towel of all things.
Scotland?s Heather
When God created the world her looked at the bare hillsides and decide that a plant was needed to beautify the slopes.
He asked the giant Oak, strongest of all the trees, but he declined saying that the soil was too shallow for him to take root and flourish.
God then approached the yellow flowered Honeysuckle to see is she would spread her beauty and fragrance throughout the hills. She too refused because there was nothing in the hospitable terrain against which she could grow.
The Rose, sweetest of all the flowers, was God?s next choice. However, she explained that she would not be able to survive the hillsides bitter winds and driving rain.
Disappointed God turned away and chanced upon a small low lying green shrub with tiny petals, some purple, some white.
It was Heather.
God asked the Heather, ?Will you grown upon the hillsides to make them more beautiful??
The Heather reflected upon the poor soil and harsh climate and was not sure if she could do the job but to God?s delighted, replied that if he wanted her to try then she would do her best.
God was so pleased with Heather that he decided to bestow 3 gifts upon her.
The strength of the Oak ? the bark of the Heather is stronger than any other tree or shrub.
The fragrance of Honeysuckle ? the Heather?s gentle fragrance is used to perfume soaps, pot pourris and cosmetics.
The sweetness of the Rose ? the sweetness of the Heather makes her one of the bee?s favourite flowers.
And to this day Heather is renowned for these three God given gifts as she fulfils her God given task.

Ahh, how true!!! It is a lovely name, I think!
I’d just point out that heather grows in Merrie England as well as Bonnie Scotland!
Gorgeous on those Scottish mountains, though!
I was in the ‘White Heather’ group, Six, or whatever-they-are-called in Guides!
